Ike Lucas


October 22, 1943 - August 2, 2017 

 

 

Kenneth Ray “Ike” Lucas, 73, passed away on August 2, 2017 in Houston, Texas after a courageous two year battle with pancreatic cancer.   He was born on October 22, 1943 in Nacogdoches, TX, the son of Christine Finney Lucas and the late Ray Burk Lucas.  

Ike was a gifted athlete and blessed with an infectious personality and smile. All District in baseball and football at Spring Branch High School, All-conference in Football at Tyler Junior College, and All-American center fielder at the University of Houston, finishing as national runner-up in 1967, with Ike being named to the All College World Series Team.  Ike was inducted into the UH Hall of Honor in 2010.  He was state ranked throughout his adult life in tennis with number one rankings in 5 different categories.  He received his Associates Degree at Tyler Junior College and continued his education with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston.  Go Coogs!

On January 28, 1976 in Houston, TX he was united in marriage to Shirley Anders, sharing a blessed union for over 41 years, filled with much love and devotion.

Ike was very active throughout his celebrated life having retired from Allstate Insurance Company. He enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing, dominos, working in his garden, and any competition with his family and friends.  He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing with his family.  Grandad, as he was known by his grand-children, loved working at Lucas Lake.  He built a cabin there with his son Ken and beloved nephew Michael, which became the favorite gathering place for family and friends.  His time outdoors was spent upon his precious John Deere tractor at “The Farm”, always working to make the hunting better for his kids and grandchildren.  He was an active member of the Hearthstone Men’s Golf Association, Second Baptist Church, West campus and the Water Board of Sacul, TX.

Surviving are his beloved wife Shirley Lucas, son Ken and wife Carole, daughter Leslie and husband Jim Smith, son Gabe and fiancé Celbi Manchaca. Cherished grandchildren Tyler and wife Caren, Mason and McKenzie Lucas, Skylar and Lucas Smith.  Great-grandchildren Trenton and Ike Lucas.  He leaves his mother Christine “Teeto” Lucas, brother Mike Lucas and wife Pat, sister-in-law Micky Lucas and nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his brother Luke Lucas.

Join us for a celebration of Ike’s life on August 11, 2017 at 11:00 am, at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Dr. Houston, TX 77057, in the sanctuary. Reception to follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, Ike requested that donations be made to Sacul Cemetery, for the perpetual care of the family cemetery. Donations can be mailed to Sacul Cemetery, PO Box 24, Sacul, TX 75788.
