Thomas (Tommy) Garland Taylor
1951 - 2018
Thomas Garland Taylor, 67 years old, passed away June, 19, 2018, in Abilene, Texas with family by his side.
A lifelong Texas resident, Mr. Taylor was born in Dallas to Ralph Garland and Kathleen Juanita Taylor. He graduated from Spring Woods High School in 1969 and was immediately drafted into the US Army. Mr. Taylor served his country as a MP during the Vietnam conflict. Upon completion of his service in the Army, Tom continued his education, earning a degree from the University of Houston in 1977. From there, he began his career for the railroad and worked as an engineer for Southern Pacific.
Tom served his country, and served the railroad, but closer to his heart was his service to both his family and community. He combined this service with a love of the outdoors and volunteered regularly with the Boy Scouts of America, helping to influence the future leaders. He also was a devoted member and volunteer for his Masonic Lodge. Thomas loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He also loved to travel and explore new places. In his later years, he enjoyed watching television and being at home. His family will remember him for the kindness he exhibited toward everyone he encountered. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tom met and fell in love with Sylena, who stood by his side through recent illnesses. The two were married on January 10, 2013, in Comanche and lived happily in Gorman.
Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife, Sylena; brother, Ralph Gregory Taylor and wife Mary of Yantis, Texas. He is also survived by his children: Christy Taylor Bray and husband, Kevin of Galveston, Texas; Daryl Taylor and wife Jennifer of Cypress, Texas; Josh Burbank and wife, Mandy, of Grand Forks, ND; Shelby Burbank Winters of Abilene, Texas; Bradley Taylor and wife, Maria, Naval Station Rota in Santa Maria, Spain; Michael Davis and wife, Kelly; and Windy Herrera; and his grandchildren, Mekaela Davis, Issiac Herrera, Blake Gonzales, Tristan Davis, Cameron Davis, Cashe Davis, Christian Bray Ulman, Isabella Bray, Dylan Taylor, Jacob Taylor, Derek Taylor, Kassandra Taylor, and Zachary Taylor.
