John Hunter O’Neal Jr. was born March 31, 1951, in Houston, Texas, and passed away on Feb. 5, 2017, in Cat Spring, Texas. John graduated from Spring Woods High School in 1969. After attending the University of Texas, he served in the Air Force Reserve. John returned to Austin and started his own homebuilding business, and met his soul mate, Mary Walsh. They were married July 1, 1989, in Potomac, Maryland. While in Maryland, they ran O’Neal Construction, which built townhomes and apartments in the greater Washington, D.C. area. In 1998, they moved to Cat Spring where he continued his homebuilding business as Cat Spring Custom Homes. John was generous with his time and talents. He was instrumental in building St. John Lutheran Church in Cat Spring. He was an active member of CCA, Texas Farm Bureau and Texas Cattleman’s Association. He was very passionate about bay fishing, sailing, riding horses, team penning and being outdoors. He loved his family, friends, dogs, horses and ranching. He was a creative craftsman and took great pride in his custom home projects which would be attested by all those that had the opportunity to work with him. John always had a smile and a heart of gold with a contagious sense of humor. John was proceeded in death by his parents Pauline and John Hunter O’Neal Sr. and his daughter Cassie Anne O’Neal. He is survived by his wife Mary, sister Jana and her husband Scott Stiffel, sister Jodi Merrill, sister-in-law Cathy and her husband Tom Dais, sister-in-law Carol O’Connor, sister-in-law Barb Flatt and husband Marlin, brother-in-law Danny Walsh and wife Wendy, and brother-in-law Jimmy Walsh and wife Kathleen, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends who loved him.
